डॉ. बिमला चालीहा एक प्रसिद्ध हिंदी लेखिका और समाजसेवी थीं। उनका जन्म 26 जनवरी 1926 को असम के जोरहाट जिले में हुआ था। उनके पिता श्री रामचन्द्र चालीहा एक वकील और राजनीतिज्ञ थे, जो बाद में असम के मुख्यमंत्री भी बने। उनकी माता श्रीमती निर्मला चालीहा एक शिक्षिका और स्वतंत्रता सेनानी थीं। डॉ. बिमला चालीहा ने अपने विद्यार्थी जीवन में ही राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन में भाग लिया और अनेक बार जेल भी गईं। उनकी पहली कहानी ‘अभिशाप’ 1948 में प्रकाशित हुई। उनकी रचनाओं में नारी जीवन की चुनौतियों, समाज की कुरीतियों, राष्ट्रभावना का दर्शन होता है। उन्हें अनेक पुरस्कार और सम्मान प्राप्त हुए, जिनमें साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार, असम साहित्य सभा पुरस्कार, असम रत्न आदि शामिल हैं। उनका निधन 26 जुलाई 2011 को गुवाहाटी में हुआ।

Dr. Bimala Chaliha was a famous Hindi writer and social worker. She was born on 26 January 1926 in Jorhat district of Assam. Her father, Shri Ramchandra Chaliha, was a lawyer and politician who later became the Chief Minister of Assam. Her mother Smt. Nirmala Chaliha was a teacher and freedom fighter. Dr. Bimala Chaliha participated in the national movement during her student life and went to jail several times. Her first story ‘Shapash’ was published in 1948. Her works reflect the challenges of women’s life, the ills of society, the spirit of nation. She has received several awards and honours including Sahitya Akademi Award, Assam Sahitya Sabha Award, Assam Ratna etc. She died on 26 July 2011 in Guwahati.
